Air Handling Units Eco design
Is Ecodesign applicable to all Air Handling Units?
You need to ask yourself these two questions:
- Is the unit serving areas of the building designed for/foresees human occupancy?
If yes, the unit must comply with Ecodesign.
- Is the unit designed to replace utilized air with a minimum of 10% outdoor air.
If yes, the unit must comply with Ecodesign.
What is the spirit of Ecodesign?
The spirit of Ecodesign is to reduce the energy use of buildings without compromising the indoor comfort and air quality while at the same time allowing existing maintenance schedules to continue. This directive allows for the EU to set regulations to ensure that environmental targets can be met.
AHU Ecodesign directive EU 1253-2014
What does this mean for Air Handling Units?
To comply with Ecodesign 2018 in general AHUs need to be more efficient:
- Heat recovery system (HRS) – Minimum thermal efficiency of 73% for plate heat exchangers (PHEX) & thermal wheels (TW). 68% for run around coils (RAC). All HRS shall have a thermal bypass. A traditional mix box with recirculation damper is not considered a method of heat recovery according to Ecodesign.
What does this mean for Air Handling Units?
- Fan & Motor – Must be equipped with a multi or variable speed drive and minimum fan efficiency must be met.
- Internal specific fan power (SFPint) – Maximum SFPint is calculated for each individual unit based on the performance of the selected components.
- Filters – must be equipped with a visual signal or alarm when filter exceeds final pressure.
