Challenges and Solutions
Challenge:
To convert an old cigarette factory in to a high quality educational accommodation. There were additional constraints of it being a listed
building.
Even the most challenging buildings can significantly reduce their carbon impact when refurbished
Solution:
Innovative sustainable design solutions include the use of the on-site wind turbine to generate ice at night-time, which is then used for daytime cooling.
An ingenious approach to integrated heating, ventilation and cooling.
The building demonstrates that air leakage should not be considered too complex an issue to be applied to a refurbishment
